Churches offer free lunch
– The Fourth Street Church of God, Fourth Street and 21st Avenue, will serve lunch from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7. The menu includes haluski with polish sausage and baked apples. The meal is available for dine in or take out.
– St. Luke's Episcopal Church will serve a free community lunch at noon Wednesday, Sept. 11. The lunch will be held in the fellowship hall at St James Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1407 Eighth Ave., right down the street from St Luke's. The meal is free; donations accepted.
Celebration marks birth of Mary
The 43rd anniversary celebration of the birth of Mary will be held Monday, Sept. 9, at St. Catherine of Siena Shrine, 308 Old Route 22, Duncansville. Mass is at 7:45 a.m. and 12:05 p.m. with the Rev. Jeremy J. Mohler as celebrant and homilist. A 5:30 p.m Mass and rosary procession will be held with the Rev. Michael Pleva as celebrant and homilist.
Those attending are urged to bring a lawn chair for seating for the outdoor event. In case of inclement weather, the outdoor Mass will be celebrated in the church.
There will be continuous rosary between masses. The theme is "Mary helping hand to all nations."
Following morning mass, coffee and donuts will be available in the church hall. There will be exhibits in the church hall and food will be available from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The day will conclude with cake and beverages in the church hall.

Chicken barbecue/bake sale planned
Chicken barbecue meals, at $12 each, will be available from 11 a.m. until sold out Saturday, Sept. 7, at the Twenty-eighth Street Church of the Brethren, 28th Street and Union Avenue, Altoona. Tickets for the meals are being sold in advance, although there will be some meals available on that date while supplies last. The meals include half a chicken, baked beans, applesauce and roll. The church is also holding a baked goods sale that day.

Church service times changed
Church services will change to the fall hours at Twenty-eighth Street Church of the Brethren, 28th Street and Union Avenue, Altoona. Sunday school will begin at 9:30 a.m. and church at 10:30 a.m. starting Sept. 8.
Community concert to be held
Christ Community United Methodist Church will host a worship-full evening of music featuring Westward Road at 6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 29, at the church, 5715 Roselawn Ave., Altoona.
Westward Road is a family trio, led by Scott Roberts, a 20-year veteran worship leader and nation charting songwriter, and his wife, the award winning vocalist, Kelli Roberts. Their son Garrett Roberts completes the musical family with his smooth vocal tones.
They have performed for audiences in large theaters and for intimate settings in rural churches, festivals and fairs.
Tickets are not required, but those planning to bring a group should call the church at 814-942-5586. An offering will be accepted to support the Roberts family's ongoing ministry.
First Friday Mass planned
First Friday Mass, confession and prayers will be held Sept. 6 at St. Aloysius Church, Cresson. Prayers begin at 6 p.m. followed by Mass and confessions at 7 p.m.
Sister Igou to speak
Sister Angela Marie Igou, vocation and novice director for the Sister Servants of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, will be the guest speaker at the Tuesday, Sept. 17, Night of Worship sponsored by Holy Spirit Ministry.
The evening of prayer will begin at 7 p.m., at St. Michael Church, Hollidaysburg. Praise and worship music will precede the talk. Igou will share her own vocation story and about her life as a Sacred Heart Sister. All ages are invited.
Yard sale planned
Asbury United Methodist Church, 1341 Grandview Road, Altoona, will hold its annual yard sale from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14.
There will be puzzles, books, food, drinks and crafts, along with a variety of yard sale items. Vendor space available for $15; bring your own table. The sale will be held on the church side. For more information, call 814-569-5561.
Church celebrates 151 years
Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church, 2121 Fifth Ave., Altoona, will celebrate 151 years of serving God and the community on Sunday, Sept. 15. Worship begins at 10:45 a.m. with guest preacher The Rev. Louis Butcher.
Chicken barbecue available
The Mt. Zion Reformed Church of Pavia will have a chicken barbecue available for pick up beginning at noon Saturday, Sept. 14.
Cost is $15 and includes half a chicken, creamy macaroni salad, baked beans, Pavia fruit salad, roll and cake. Chicken only is $8.

Peacemaker Training offered
Peacemaker Training, how to handle conflict in a Biblical manner, will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept 14, at the Altoona Alliance Church. There is no cost to attend and lunch will be provided.

Afternoon presentations set
Sunday Afternoon Conversations will be held at Himmelreich Library, 18 Market St., Lewisburg, from 2 to 3:15 p.m. every Sunday in September. God's Awesome Creation will be the subject of the talks. Grief support group to begin
A Grief Share Support Group will meet at Altoona Alliance Church. The group will meet from 5:30 to 7:15 p.m. Wednesdays, Sept. 11 through Dec. 11. Women's retreat planned
Author and speaker Liz Kelly will be featured at Jesus Approaches: A Women's Day Retreat set to be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sept. 28 at St. Benedict Church.
The day of reflection is based on Kelly's book "Jesus Approaches: What Contemporary Women Can Learn About Healing, Freedom & Joy from the Women of the New Testament."
The day includes mass, adoration, opportunities for confession and fellowship.

Children's Choir concert set
Second Avenue Global Methodist Church, 130 Second Ave., Altoona, will host The African Children's Choir at 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 27. The choir will perform popular children's music, traditional spiritual songs and African cultural pieces. Donations appreciated.
Quilting ministry offered
Zion Lutheran Church invites women of all ages to attend Stitch and Sew in Zion's Fellowship Hall from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesdays. Christian Mothers will recite the pro-life rosary Thursdays after the noon Mass at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, Altoona. The group meets in front of the Blessed Mother Chapel.
