The Tyrone Rotary Club participated in a student exchange program with Claudia Calcara as the Italian Rotary exchange student and Chase Yaniello as the American Rotary exchange student.

Claudia visited first from June 1 through June 30. She enjoyed spending time with her host family, Jason and Christina Shade of Bellwood, and their daughter, Chase Yaniello, incoming 11th grade student at Bellwood-Antis High School.

They visited Niagara Falls, so that Claudia and Chase could both experience seeing the Falls. They also visited Washington, D.C.

On June 30, Chase and Claudia flew by themselves out of Dulles Airport in Washington, D.C., to Rome International Airport, and then flew from Rome to Catania, which is in Sicily.

Chase enjoyed spending time with her host family, Roberta Romano, and Giuseppe Calcara, along with Claudia, through July 31.

Chase got to witness the eruption of the Mount Etna volcano July 4-5 in Sicily. The eruption was so large that Catania airport had to close. Mount Etna is the largest active volcano in Europe.

Chase was able to see the beautiful ancient architecture of the buildings, churches and streets of Catania and surrounding areas, as well as the crystal-clear sea.

Chase said she is very appreciative of this student exchange program opportunity through Rotary and thanks everyone who helped her along the way.

Exchanges for students such as Chase and Claudia are sponsored by Rotary clubs in more than 100 countries around the world.

Starting at /week.
