Two area public libraries have released their schedules of programs and events for the month of May.
Cresson
The Cresson Public Library, 231 Laurel Ave., Cresson, is seeking volunteers for its summer reading programs. Volunteers over the age of 18 will need a child abuse history clearance, which is free. Contact the library to volunteer at 814-886-2619.
n A paint party with the Poor Painter, Tabitha Shimer, will be held at
3 p.m. Saturday, May 4, at the Cresson American Legion. Canvases are
16 x 20 inches and are pre-drawn. Shimer will guide participants step-by-step through the process. The painting is of a cow's face, with flowers in her hair, and flowers in the background. A photo of the completed painting is on the library's Facebook page. To register, call Shimer at 814-569-8830.
n The Language and Literacy program, with a licensed and certified speech-language pathologist, will include a story and activities to spark a child's language skills and imagination. Groups will start at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 4. Contact Amanda George at 814-932-1954 for details and registration.
n The library has partnered with Goodwill's "Collect and Earn" fundraiser donation drive. Items may be dropped off at the Goodwill truck at the library from 1 to 5 p.m. June 29 and the library will be paid by the weight of the truck. Contact the library for a list of eligible items.
n Pop-Up Craft Days will be held Tuesdays, May 7 and May 21. All materials and instructions are provided for these DIYs.
n Story Time will be held from 5 to 6 p.m. Wednesdays, May 1 and May 8. Each week has a different story, craft, and/or activity. Register by calling the library.
n Create a book without words using embroidery in the fabric bookmaking class. Each month participants will learn different ways to use fabric and thread to tell a story, weaving 12 pages into a book by the end of the year. Participants can bring scraps of fabric, broken jewelry, buttons, beads, sequins, lace, yarn or thread to incorporate into the book. Classes are held at 6 p.m. on the fourth Wednesday of every month. Space is limited.
Roaring Spring
The Roaring Spring Community Library, 320 E. Main St., Roaring Spring, is open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday; 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday; and 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday. The library will be closed May 25-27 in observance of Memorial Day. For more information or to register for programs, call the library at 814-224-2994.
n Upcoming programs include the Magical Make Believe story and craft hour, held at 10:30 a.m. each Wednesday.
n The Story Tails literacy program will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 4; preregistration required. Craveable Creations teen cooking program will be held at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 7; preregistration is preferred.
n Hogwarts inspired herbology is slated for 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 8; preregistration is preferred.
n The library offers homework help from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
n Property tax/rent rebate program assistance will be offered from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 4.
n A community health fair will be held from
11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday,
May 14, and from 5:30 to 7 p.m. that afternoon, a container garden workshop will be held. Preregistration for the garden workshop is required. The workshop costs $10 to cover material, with cash or check payable to the Blair County Conservation District.
n Gloria Gates Care will be on site from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 21.
n Conemaugh Nason Medical Center blood pressure screenings will be held from noon to 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 28.
