Folk College will be held May 24-26 on the Juniata College campus is Huntingdon. Folk College is a fun and friendly weekend of playing and hearing folk music, with workshops, concerts, jams, a contradance and coaching sessions.
Folk College was founded to help more people learn to play music together. It is a non-competitive environment where you can kindle -- or rekindle -- your love of playing through folk music.
Each year, the staff includes nationally known musicians and wonderfully nurturing teachers from a broad spectrum of folk styles. Within one weekend, you'll have a choice of workshops ranging from old-time to Celtic to blues to international, and you'll get to sing, dance, play and listen.
This year the faculty includes host band Simple Gifts, Boston-based string quartet featuring New Grass and Swing the Ruta Beggars, two of America's best-loved multi-instrumentalists and folk singers Sally Rogers and Howie Bursen, Celtic roots trio Kalos, quirky singer-songwriter Shanna in a Dress, multi-genre trad Midnight on the Water, groovy Middle Eastern Gypsy Funk Squad and more.
Musicians of all instruments and levels are welcome, and there are also choices for non-musicians who want to listen, learn and experiment with folk music. Each evening features a faculty concert followed by faculty-led jam sessions. Saturday after the concert, we hold a contradance with an open band.
You'll also have an opportunity to be coached by a professional musician in a band setting and to perform in the student concert. Professional development will be offered for school teachers, including Act 48 credit for Pennsylvania teachers.
The are two concerts open to the public: The Friday, May 24, concert features host band Simple Gifts, psychedelic Middle Eastern music and dance Gypsy Funk Squad, quirky, witty singer-songwriter Shanna in a Dress, and a fusion of traditional fiddle tunes, jazz, tango, classical, and more with Midnight on the Water.
The Saturday, May 25 concert features a trio with Celtic Roots, French and more on guitar, accordion, and fiddle Kalos, two of America's best loved multi-instrumentalists and folk singers Sally Rogers & Howie Bursen, and Boston-based string quartet featuring New Grass & Swing The Ruta Beggars.
Both concerts start at 7 p.m. at Rosenberger Auditorium on the Juniata College campus in Huntingdon.
The concerts are open to the public, with tickets available in advance and at the door.
