50 years ago: April 11, 1974

A major fire in Bellwood destroyed three businesses the previous night: Lloyd's Rexall Drug Store, Sakmar's 5 Cent to $1 Store and the K&M Restaurant. An apartment building and Mid-State Bank Office were damaged. Bellwood Excelsior, Tipton-Antis, Tyrone and Pinecroft Fire companies were needed to put out the blaze, and no injuries were reported.

25 years ago: April 11, 1999

Rep. Rick Geist proposed an $18.6 million project to flood-proof Mill Run between 31st Street and Eldorado using bridge replacements, levees, detention ponds, concrete slopes, channel relocations, stream widenings and bank reinforcements, a two-year project that was proposed before but shelved when municipalities couldn't agree on rights of way, utility relocation and money issues.

The Jaffa Shrine Circus was celebrating its 75th year in Altoona, currently the Royal Hanneford Circus. John Campbell was the Jaffa circus administrator.
