FLINTON -- The Glendale Education Foundation board members met Feb. 26 at Josie's Restaurant to discuss numerous upcoming projects and plans for the remainder of the school year and summer months.
GSDEF's annual golf outing will be held June 14 at Sinking Valley Country Club near Altoona.
GSDEF board member, Patty Kimberly, discussed an event recently held at Glendale Elementary School with author Jenna Rice speaking to students in grades K-2 with her sequel book, "Hank and The Baby." Rice spoke with students in grades K-2 last spring with the original book titled, "Hank's Forever Home." Each child received a copy of the sequel book, courtesy of a private donation to the GSDEF.
GSDEF board member, Diane Andrews, also spoke of the Glendale One Book Program to be held this spring. This year's book is titled "Bad Apple, A Tale of Friendship." Students in kindergarten and first grade will enjoy an apple-themed activity, applesauce snack treat, and listening to the story of this year's book.
The Andrews' family donated the applesauce treat for the students.
In addition with the Literacy Programs for this year, the GSDEF is exploring fundraising opportunities for a book vending machine to be placed in the elementary school.
The GSDEF Scholarship Committee spoke of multiple scholarship opportunities for Glendale seniors. All Glendale seniors are encouraged to view all opportunities available on Google Classroom for the Class of 2024 Scholarships. Deadlines for applications are quickly approaching.
GSDEF Executive Director, William Morrison, led a discussion on changing of the annual GSDEF meeting schedule to allow for additional planning of upcoming events and the new school year. The board agreed to move the scheduled October meeting to May. The new schedule of meetings will be February, April, May and September.
At February's meeting, the GSDEF also held nominations and elections to fill vacancies for both board members, and officers of the board. GSDEF voted and welcomed Kay Stiver and Mary Tatum-Robinson to fill positions of board members. Kelsey McManus, currently holding the acting president position, was elected to GSDEF president, and Kelsey Henry was elected to GSDEF vice president.
