Webelos test skills at Outdoor Challenge
The Blazing Buffaloes Patrol from Pack 3331 beat out seven other patrols to take home the first place overall score trophy and first place in the sled race. The patrol was made up of Mitchell Seelye, Avery Smith, Owen Jancula and Simon Stephens.

HOLLIDAYSBURG -- Patrols made up of Webelos and Arrow of Light Cub Scouts from Central Pennsylvania competed in a day event of scout skills at the 2024 Chief Logan District Webelos Klondike Derby at Legion Park on Feb. 24.
A Klondike Derby is an annual cold-weather event held by Scouts and is based on the heritage of the Klondike Gold Rush.
The Derby is a team-building exercise requiring leadership and decision-making skills. Patrols made up of fourth- and fifth-grade Webelos and Arrow of Light ranked Scouts must navigate between stations and complete a set of challenges to test their Scout craft skills within a set time period, earning points toward a total score. They must transport their gear on a homemade sled pulled by the Scouts. This year, eight Patrols from seven Cub Scout units competed.
Challenges included flagpole construction, tent making, knots, fire building, an obstacle course, the spider web, message in a bottle, stretcher relay and 20 questions. Patrols also had the chance to compete in a sled race. Challenge stations were run by Scouts BSA Troops, Cub Scout Packs and volunteers from the Chief Logan and Keystone districts.
Trophies were awarded to the top three finishers in two events: overall Klondike score and sled race.

The patrol was made up of Owen Jancula, Mitchell Seelye, Avery Smith and Simon Stephens. Mike Smith and Jeanette Keefer are the den leaders. Pack 3331 is sponsored by St. Michael the Archangel Church in Hollidaysburg.

Den Leaders are Tim Yeager and Ted Lechene.
The Phoenix Patrol came in third in the sled race. The patrol is made up of Mathias Badorrek, Seth Caldwell, Noah Yinkey, Reiley Helsel and Kolby Huntington. Ken Doyle and Alex Badorreck are the den leaders. Pack 3332 is sponsored by American Legion Post 516 of Hollidaysburg.

Other patrols who participated in the Klondike were the Wildcats Patrol from Pack 3330, the Mighty Dragon Patrol from Pack 4482, the Little Lions Patrol from 3025 and the Thunderbolts Patrol from Pack 3015.
Chief Logan District is a part of the Juniata Valley Council of the Boy Scouts of America. This council was chartered in 1934 and serves youth members and volunteer adult members throughout Blair, Centre, Huntingdon, Juniata and Mifflin counties. Pack 2221 is part of the Laurel Highlands Council. LHC serves youth members and volunteer adult leaders throughout Western Pennsylvania, Western Maryland and parts of West Virginia
