Allegany College offers students help with FAFSA priority deadline
CUMBERLAND, Md. -- Allegany College of Maryland wants current and prospective students to complete their 2024-25 FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) by Maryland's priority deadline of March 1, to maximize their financial aid.
The application is available at www.student
aid.gov/apply-for-aid/fafsa and ACM's federal school code is 002057.
FAFSA's 2023 overhaul helps more students.
The college recommends that all students apply for federal financial aid using the 2024-25 FAFSA, even if they doubt their eligibility or they haven't received aid in the past.
The FAFSA's income brackets were expanded for Pell Grants and other forms of assistance meaning that more students may receive aid.
As of Jan. 30, the U.S. Department of Education made an additional $1.8 billion of federal aid available by adjusting their aid calculations for inflation.
To make it easier for students and their parents, the FAFSA no longer requires applicants to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool.
Students can maximize their aid further with help.
ACM financial aid experts can help students better understand their financial aid options, answer their FAFSA questions and even offer advice for budgeting college costs. In person or virtual one-on-one meetings with the Student Financial Aid Office can be scheduled by calling 301-784-5213 or emailing studentfinancialaid@allegany.edu.
Financial aid staff are available to help parents of dependent students navigate their part of the FAFSA process. Parents will need to create or use their own Federal Student Aid ID to complete their child's FAFSA.
Penn Highlands Police Academy plans open house March 4
JOHNSTOWN -- The Pennsylvania Highlands Police Academy will host an open house from 6 to 7 p.m. Monday, March 4, at the college's Richland campus, Room A143, directly across the hall from the College's Large Group Instruction (LGI) classroom.
"The field of law enforcement is both exciting and growing, with many new career opportunities for our graduates," said Dennis Miller, police academy director.
During the event, participants will gain insights into the application process, pre-screening tests and overall curriculum. Additionally, a guided tour of the academy's facilities will be provided.

Thiel student-athlete recognized
on PAC Academic Honor Roll
GREENVILLE -- A total of 60 Thiel College student-athletes were named to the Presidents' Athletic Conference Academic Honor Roll for their performance in the classroom during the fall 2023 semester.
The PAC Academic Honor Roll recognizes student-athletes who attain a grade-point average of 3.6 or higher during their season of competition. A record total of 848 student-athletes were recognized on the PAC Academic Honor Roll for the Fall 2023 semester.
Student-athletes from the Mirror coverage area include:
n Lucas Buchanan, DuBois, a political science major and a member of the football team.
n Chad Morningstar, Saxton, a history major and a member of the football team.
n Jackson Pletcher, DuBois, a business administration finance major and a member of the football team.
