Law student selected for civil rights field study
NEW YORK CITY -- Makayla Murphy of Altoona was selected to be among 25 undergraduate students from Pace University's Dyson College of Arts and Sciences and law students from Elizabeth Haub School of Law that recently traveled to Montgomery, Ala., to engage in an interdisciplinary civil rights field study.
Their focus included the understanding of social justice, combating mass incineration, addressing excessive punishment and confronting racial inequality.
As part of their studies, the students visited sites including The Legacy Museum, the National Memorial for Peace and Justice, the Frank M. Johnson Jr. Federal Courthouse, the Freedom Ride Museum, the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, the Bethel Baptist Church, along with the 16th Street Baptist Church and the Capital Building in Montgomery.
These students also had the opportunity to meet with attorneys from the Equal Justice Initiative, and with Federal Court Justice, the Honorable Myron H. Thompson.
While visiting Thompson, Murphy was told to take a seat at his bench for a photo with him.
He told her that whenever she is sworn in as a federal judge herself, he wants a "shout out."
