CLAYSBURG -- The Claysburg Education Foundation is accepting scholarship applications.
In memory of Don Witherspoon
The Bruno and Lena DeGol Family Foundation has awarded a $1,500 annual scholarship award to the foundation for a period of 10 years beginning in 2022.
The scholarship will be awarded annually in memory of the late Donald E. Witherspoon to a Claysburg-Kimmel senior who will be pursuing a four-year degree.
Witherspoon was a Greenfield-Kimmel, now Claysburg-Kimmel School District, graduate in the Class of 1960. Witherspoon was also president of the Blair County Chapter of the NAACP until his death on Dec. 26, 2020.
Witherspoon was well-known both in the Claysburg and Altoona areas for his efforts to work with individuals and groups for the betterment of the community.
The Bruno and Lena DeGol Foundation was established in 1994 with a wide range of charitable donations to many groups in the Altoona and surrounding area.
The DeGol Foundation established this award in memory of Witherspoon who was a long-time, close, personal friend of the family to focus on continuing education by a senior each year at Claysburg-Kimmel.
In honor of George S. Dively and Jennie Dively Gardner
The Claysburg Education Foundation was awarded monies to cover the annual scholarship award to promote the legacy of George S. Dively and Jennie Dively Gardner, who both grew up in Claysburg.
The George S. Dively Scholarship portion is awarded in honor of George S. Dively, a native of the Claysburg area and a member of the first high school class of 1917.
The Jennie Dively Gardner Scholarship portion is awarded in honor of Mrs. Jennie Dively Gardner, elementary school teacher in the Greenfield-Kimmel Schools during the 1920's.
The amount of the award initially shall consist of $1,000 for the first year, renewable up to $1,000 per year for three additional years upon proof of continued successful enrollment in a post-secondary program. The awardee must be accepted at a post-secondary degree or certificate granting institution and continue toward the degree or certification in order to be eligible for renewal.
Applicants are considered on the basis of their qualifications in the following areas: scholarship, character traits, school activity involvement, leadership qualities, school attendance and community and home involvement.
Part of the monies for this fund were previously established going back to the early 1990s and recently transferred to the Foundation. However, another donation this year will further give support to the future full establishment of the program when two scholarships per year will be awarded for four years each.
Applications
The awards will be made at Claysburg-Kimmel's annual graduation based on the established criteria.
Scholarship applications must be submitted by April 30 of each year. Copies of both scholarship applications are available from the Claysburg-Kimmel High School counseling office, at cksdbulldogs.com or at www.claysburgeducationfoundation.org/literature.html.
