Student works Little League World Series events

LOCK HAVEN — Commonwealth University-Lock Haven student Zachary Bumbarger of Philipsburg gained a unique insight into game-day operations by working Little League World Series events this summer.

Sport management students Hannah Possinger of East Stroudsburg and Joshua Torrens of Pottstown worked the nearly two-week Little League World Series, developing their skills in crowd management, customer service and time management.

As part of the Little League World Series, each year, the MLB Little League Classic is held between two Major League Baseball teams at Muncy Bank Ballpark at Historic Bowman Field in Williamsport. This year, nine sport management students and three faculty members from Commonwealth University worked as ushers and Little League team liaisons at the MLB LLC match-up between the Philadelphia Phillies and Washington Nationals.

The MLB Little League Classic marks the first event in the Commonwealth University sport management program where students from multiple locations were in attendance.

First-year student named Albright College Global Scholar

READING — Sapphire Bias of Curwensville has been named an Albright College Global Scholar.

The Global Scholars cohort of 18 first-year students will be housed together in a living learning community throughout their first year, while taking a series of courses together in the fall and spring semesters.

Bias is a graduate of Curwensville Area Junior Senior High School majoring in game and simulation development at Albright.

Included in the program is a January study-away experience during which Global Scholars explore a particular topic with Albright faculty who are teaching the Scholars’ fall and spring courses.

This year’s cohort will study Spanish together, aiding in their study abroad exploration of South America. Using Cuenca, Ecuador as a base, students will live with a host family for several weeks while learning from Albright faculty about comparative cultures.

Future Global Scholars study-away locations include Costa Rica, Ecuador, France, Ghana, Mexico and Spain. Employment opportunities to mentor incoming program participants will be available for second year Global Scholars.

Open to students exploring any major, the Global Scholars program is designed to provide meaningful study abroad experiences for students who are often underrepresented in study abroad programs.

The innovative program is designed to spark each student’s vision for a meaningful future, so that they graduate ready to make an impact.

Founders’ Day convocation awards presented in Clearfield

CLEARFIELD — On Thursday, Sept. 28, Commonwealth University-Clearfield held its 34th annual Founders’ Day convocation awards celebration in the Clearfield Academic Building multipurpose room.

The event, hosted by the Clearfield Educational Foundation and CU-Clearfield, honored 22 students with awards and scholarships.

Area student award recipients and their presenters were:

n Jarrett Bezilla of Morrisdale, Clearfield Campus Founders’ Award, presented by David Bailey, Clearfield location founder.

n Olivia Cutler of Clearfield, Penn Highlands Clearfield, presented by Brad Chapman, president of PH Clearfield and PH Elk and Woodward Pharmacy, and City Drugs Educational Scholarship, presented by Dr. Darlene Ardary, associate professor and assistant chair, School of Nursing.

Student receives scholarship

at Baldwin Wallace University

BEREA, Ohio — Abbie George of Ebensburg was among more than 700 first-year students welcomed to the Baldwin Wallace University campus this fall who earned more than $13.1 million in merit scholarships.

George, a graduate of Central Cambria High School majoring in sport management, earned a $21,000 President’s Scholarship based on outstanding academic achievements in high school.

BW’s merit scholarships are awarded to full-time students and are renewable up to four years with good academic and social standing.

BW offers a wide range of financial support to its students — more than $56 million for the 2023-24 academic year.

receive tuition vouchers

EVERETT — The Bedford County Regional Education Foundation provided $1,500 in tuition vouchers to five prospective students: Gabrielle Bauman (Bedford), Autumn George (Bedford), Riley Milburn (Bedford), Jenna Baker (Bedford) and Raegan Shindle (McConnellsburg).

The vouchers to attend the Allegany College of Maryland Bedford County Campus were awarded during the college’s open house on Nov. 4.

Shindle won the $500 voucher, Bauman and George received $300 vouchers, and Milburn and Baker received $200 vouchers.

Lebanon Valley College recognizes fall student-athletes

ANNVILLE — Lebanon Valley College recognized more than 200 student-athletes who competed for Flying Dutchmen athletic teams in the fall. Local students include:

n Darrian Berkheimer of Altoona, a graduate of Altoona Area High School, is pursuing a bachelor of science in exercise science at The Valley. Berkheimer was a member of the women’s soccer team. The Lebanon Valley College women’s soccer team concluded the 2023 season with a 5-8-2 overall record.

n Jayven Ritchey of Saxton, a graduate of Tussey Mountain High School, Saxton, is pursuing a bachelor of arts in exploratory at The Valley. Ritchey was a member of the football team. The Lebanon Valley College football team concluded the 2023 season with a 6-5 overall record, earning its second straight postseason appearance.

Blair County students named Provost Scholars at IUP

INDIANA, Pa. — Students from the area have been recognized as Provost Scholars at Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

Provost Scholar status is achieved when students complete a minimum of 45 semester hours at IUP and have a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher. Provost Scholar recognition is given only once during a student’s time of study at IUP.

Blair County students include:
