The Altoona YMCA held a 102nd anniversary celebration dinner at the Jaffa Mosque with Congressman Wilmer Mizell of North Carolina the main speaker. The Congressman was known as "Vinegar Bend" when he played professional baseball and was with the Pittsburgh Pirates when they won the 1960 World Series. He was born in Vinegar Bend, Ala.
25 years ago: Jan. 18, 1999
A Washington, D.C., company called The United States Produce Co. was proposing to build a $45 million tomato plant in southern Blair County but was fighting bankruptcy in court. Their CEO, Stanley Siegel, said that should not stop them from the project.

Altoona residents Dan Savino and Ryan Claycomb were trying to bring auto racing, called the "Sunday Thunder," back to Ebensburg after being discontinued for 15 years due to noise issues and said that a deal with officials from the Cambria County Fair fell through.
