Altoona Area Public Library, 1600 Fifth Ave., has announced its February activities.
n Chess Club will meet from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursdays. Meet at the rear tables on the first floor. No registration necessary. Anyone under the age of 16 needs to be accompanied by their legal guardian.
n First Friday Fun will be held at 9:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 2. A special play time for ages 3 and younger. Come in clothes that can get messy for a variety of fun sensory stations to explore. Weather permitting, this program will be held outdoors, so dress accordingly. n Library Knit-In will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 3. There may be teachers to help get you started. Beginners bring size 8 needles and some light-colored yarn. This is a free adult program. No registration required.
n 3D Design for Dungeons and Dragons for Teens will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 3. Learn to create 3D design for Dungeons and Dragons while crafting intricate and immersive landscapes, characters and objects that come to life, enhancing the tabletop role-playing experience with a tangible and visually captivating dimension. n Super Saturday: Shadow Puppets will be held from 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 3. Learn about the history of this ancient form of entertainment before constructing your own shadow theater and set of shadow puppets. This program is for ages 4 to 12. Call 814-946-0417, ext.123, to register.
n In partnership with the Video Game Clubs of America, the library will host a gaming club from 3 to 5 p.m. Tuesdays, Feb. 6, 13, 20 and 27. From tabletop board games, card games, Nintendo Switch and more, each week will be something different. Call 814-946-0417, ext 125, to register.
n "Sample Food through the Ages" will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 6, in the library board room. Experience a historical presentation on the food topic for the month, followed by a cooking demonstration. Samples and recipes will be given out at the end of the program. n Teens are welcome at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 7, for some virtual reality fun with the Oculus system. Take turns playing different games on the Oculus, including Beat Saber. Register by calling 814-946-0417, ext. 125.
n Homeschool Hub: Sparking Curiosity will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 8. Participants will learn about the basics of electrical circuits before exploring them with a selection of toys, games and building sets. This program is for ages K-6. Call 814-946-0417, ext.123, to register.
n Board Game Night for Adults will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 8. Put your devices on pause and join us for a fun night of board games. Games will include Life, Stratego, Boggle, Yahtzee and more. Call 814-946-0417, ext. 125, to register.
n Sensory Storytime will be held at 11 a.m. Fridays, Feb. 9 and 23. An inclusive program for patrons ages 5 and older who are on the autism spectrum or have sensory-related needs. Call 814-946-0417, ext.123, to register.
n Make Valentines for Vets at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 10, in the Youth Room. Join us in making cards for local veterans to thank them for their service. No registration necessary.
n The Friends of the Library Book Club will meet at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb.10, in the library board room. The book for February is "West with Giraffes" by Lynda Rutledge. Future book club dates will be March 9, April 13 and May 11, with books to be announced.
n Paint Space will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 10. This Paint Space is a one-session program where participants will be given a beginner-level subject to paint while following along with a video. All supplies are provided and participants can take their work home at the end of the class. The class is for ages 13 and older, and the cost is $10 due at registration. All skill levels are welcome. n Adult patrons are invited to visit the library on Monday, Feb. 12, and grab a free pin cushion kit to take and make at home. There will be a limited supply of kits available during the day, and then again in the evening, while supplies last.
