PORTAGE -- The Portage Area Historical Society recently received a 9/11 National Memorial Trail bench, only the second bench to be set along the 1,300 miles of the 9/11 National Memorial Trail. The other bench is in the Rose Garden at the Flight 93 National Memorial site in Shanksville.

The bench sits along Route 53, the path of the 9/11 National Memorial Trail in an area dedicated to showing the history of the community.

For years, the historical society has hosted groups who annually ride the 1,300-mile trail from the Pentagon to Flight 93 to Ground Zero then back to the Pentagon.

In the summer, the historical society opens the Portage Station Museum to provide a meal and a rest stop for the riders.

Portage is also a Community Support stop for Warrior Expedition Veterans, veterans who ride or walk the 1,300 miles.

Portage has been working for years helping the 9/11 National Memorial Trail group to get the

bike path off of the main highway and onto the countryside.
