Portage students part of butterfly program

PORTAGE -- During the 2022-23 school year, seniors at Portage Area High School planted a butterfly garden to beautify the area around Portage Area Historical Society's Allegheny Portage Railroad Display.

This was also done to make people aware that monarch butterflies are on the endangered species list.

To continue the project, second-graders at Portage Elementary School watched monarch butterfly caterpillars change into butterflies and learned all about the butterflies.

On Sept. 12, environmentalist Suzann Rensel was at the school to tag the butterflies.

She told students about the butterflies migrating to Mexico and how the University of Kansas will search to find if any of the butterflies from the school made it to Mexico.
