David Johanos, the original conductor of the Altoona Symphony Orchestra about 20 years earlier, returned to Altoona to perform with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. He had since studied in Europe and directed the Dallas Symphony.

A woman named Brett Wagenbach stopped in Altoona on a 4,414-mile ice skating fundraiser from California to Rhode Island to raise money against breast cancer in memory of her mother. She founded an organization called Bridge to Cure Home (BACH).

Members of the Pennsylvania Federation of Fraternal Clubs, Tim Cassidy president, which included the Allegheny Club, Bavarian Aid Society, Knights of Columbus, Heidelberg Country Club, Cesare Battisti, St. Stanislaus Kostka Brotherhood, Loyal Order of Moose, United Veterans Association and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3 and Ladies Auxiliary, donated $1,610 to the Multiple Sclerosis Society.
