FLINTON -- The Glendale Education Foundation board members met for the first meeting of the school year on Sept. 25 at Josie's Restaurant in Coalport.
The members discussed numerous upcoming projects and plans for the year underway.
In June, the GSDEF celebrated the annual golf outing fundraiser, netting just over $14,000 in net profit.
GSDEF Vice President and Golf Committee Chairwoman, Kelsey McManus, commented on the success of the outing and noted additional enhancements for the coming year's event.
Additional details regarding the event will be discussed at the foundation's October meeting. The 2024 golf outing is planned for June 14.
WineFest V, scheduled for Feb. 3, was also discussed. Board members discussed possible enhancements to the fundraiser, as well as details of ticket sales, basket auction and concession menus. Additional details will be discussed at the October meeting. Tickets for the 2024 event will also become available soon.
The GSDEF also discussed the Children's Books and Literacy Program for 2023-24. The GSDEF had discussed and agreed to fund the program with regards to Read Across America Week and corresponding activities.
GSDEF board member, Patty Kimberly, also announced author Jenna Rice will be speaking to students in grades K-2 with her sequel book. Rice spoke with students in grades K-2 last spring with an original book titled "Hank's Forever Home." Each child will receive a copy of the sequel book, courtesy of a private donation to the GSDEF.
Two new Challenge Grants for Teachers were discussed at the September meeting for the current school year. The first project was presented for the Glendale Elementary School, regarding a sensory path and playground space to be assembled on the school's tennis court. This project is underway.
The second project is geared toward Glendale High School students. This project, titled "Pathway to Graduation," offers support to students needing resources to meet all graduation requirements. This project offers needed support to students furthering their education or entering the workforce following graduation.
The GSDEF has agreed to continue the funding for the Penn Highlands Dual Enrollment Program for students enrolled. For this program, all students will be reimbursed for the tuition once they have successfully completed the course.
Vinnie, the Viking mascot, has been making a presence at the Glendale schools in the last few weeks. Vinnie, purchased in 2022 by the GSDEF, has participated in the Glendale homecoming pep rally and greeted children arriving at the elementary School. Vinnie is anticipated to attend a number of special events this year.
