50 years ago: Sept. 12, 1973

The Governor's Justice Commission approved a $44,285 grant for the formation of a five-man specialized crime alert team (SCAT) by the Altoona Police Dept. Another grant of $28,907 was to let civilians take over routine police jobs to free police for crime work.

25 years ago: Sept. 12, 1998

Conrail hazmat specialist Tim Mannas oversaw a chemical disaster drill in Conrail's Rose Yard for the Altoona Fire Department's 20-member hazardous materials team, several wearing full hazmat suits.

10 years ago: Sept. 12, 2013

George E. Knott, 82, of Graystone Court in Logan Township, blew taps on his trumpet four times the previous day in honor of the four airplanes that were hijacked and crashed on 9/11, 12 years prior. Knott was a U.S. Army veteran and voluntarily played taps at military funerals.
