Williamsburg alumni reunion Saturday

By Walt Frank 2 min read

WILLIAMSBURG -- More than 300 people will gather at the Williamsburg High School Athletic Field on Saturday for the 125 Years of Williamsburg High School Graduations Alumni Reunion.

The event is a followup to the 100th anniversary celebration held in 1998 orchestrated by the late William H. Cramer, longtime high school art teacher and founder of the Williamsburg Historical Society.

"He had asked me to try to continue and keep this going. This was a good opportunity to recognize not only the administration but bring the alumni together," said event chairman David Sollenberger, a 1966 WHS graduate.

Sollenberger said he will talk about two prominent graduates at the event -- his great uncle D. Raymond Sollenberger and W. Raymond Metz.

D. Raymond Sollenberger held numerous positions over the years, including serving in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives from 1937-48. He was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1956 and served as assistant principal and principal at Williamsburg and was supervising principal for the Catharine-Woodbury-Williamsburg Joint School System from 1954-58.

Metz was a member of the school's first graduating class in 1898 and owned Metz Hardware in town for many years.

Former teachers, administrators, prominent alumni and officials will be recognized as guests of honor during the anniversary event.

Longtime basketball coach and teacher Don Appleman will be master of ceremonies and Linda Lang will organize music for the event, which is being catered by Frederick's Meats of Roaring Spring.

An open mic session will be held to allow others to address the gathering, Sollenberger said.

Alumni from as far away as North Carolina will be attending.

Sollenberger said he is pleased with the response as ticket sales started slowly in early June but picked up consistently after that. Ticket sales will be cut off a day or two before the event which will be held under a large tent.
