Blair Garden Club to meet for picnic
Members of the Blair Garden Club will meet at 5 p.m. Monday, July 31, at Canoe Creek State Park, Pavillion 2.
This is the club's summer picnic, and members will be joined by members of the Patton Garden Club.
Club member Lois Hampton will demonstrate origami/paper flower pots to start seeds in an earth-friendly manner.
Table coverings and beverages will be supplied by the club officers.
Members whose last names begin with A-H are to take a dessert; I-P, a salad; and Q-Z, a casserole.
AFSCME Retirees 8306 to hold picnic
DUNCANSVILLE -- The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Retirees Sub-chapter 8306 summer picnic will be held Wednesday, Aug. 2, at the Union Hall on Patchway Drive.
Please arrive by 12:30 to eat at 1 p.m.
The theme is Hawaiian, so wear something colorful.
Catholic Daughters plan yard sale
Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Court 1755, will sponsor a yard sale from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 5, at 1200 N. Juniata St., and Cedar Boulevard, across from Legion Park.
There will be a large variety of items -- furniture, small appliances, kitchen items, Christmas and other seasonal decor, toys, games, puzzles, crafts and more.
NARVRE to meet Wednesday
DUNCANSVILLE -- The National Association of Retired and Veteran Railway Employees will meet
at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 2, at Prime Sirloin Buffet.
NARVRE is the only chartered national organization whose sole purpose is to protect pension rights.
All retired, veteran and present railroad employees (and their spouses) of any craft are invited to attend the meeting of NARVRE Unit 173, Altoona. Members and nonmembers are welcome.

Southern Cove plans festival, ox roast
NEW ENTERPRISE -- The Southern Cove Volunteer Fire Company will hold a 75th Anniversary Festival and Ox Roast on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 4, 5 and 6, at the Replogle Community Building 141 Replogle School Road.
Food sales will begin at 11 a.m. all three days.
Friday evening's feature entertainment is the Kenton Sitch Band from 7 to 10 p.m.
On Saturday, Aug. 5, a car and truck cruise-in will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., feature parade at 6 p.m. and the band 100 Proof will take center stage at 7 p.m.
On Sunday, Aug. 6, a chicken barbecue will be held. At 1:30 p.m.., the local group Route 869 will perform.
All concerts are free and open to the public; take your lawn chair.
PA Prison Society seeks volunteers
The Blair County Chapter of the Pennsylvania Prison Society is seeking individuals interested in helping imprisoned community members.
The Prison Society is a 235-year-old organization dedicated to the assurance that the needs of incarcerated individuals are being met.
As the state's only independent monitor of prisons, volunteers meet privately and in groups with persons held in custody to report on conditions and address inmate's concerns.
Trained volunteers regularly monitor conditions inside the Blair County Prison and provide effective oversight, working cooperatively with prison staff as needed, as well as serving as a valuable link to the families of those who are imprisoned.
Other volunteers help educate our community about prisons and ways to reintegrate former inmates into productive members of society.

Drag Bingo Fundraiser set for Aug. 12
Families United for Change will hold a Drag Bingo Fundraiser on Saturday, Aug. 12, at The Altoona Grand Hotel. The doors will open at 6 p.m.
It will include entertainment by Depiro's Divas, raffles, vendors and bingo.
Drinks can be purchased at the event, and food can be purchased at The Grouses Nest
Tickets are $30, which includes eight bingo cards.

Country Traditions to perform Aug. 12
The Alum Bank Community Volunteer Fire Company Auxiliary will present the band Country Traditions from 6:30 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 12 at the fire hall.
Admission is $5 per person. The kitchen will open at 5 p.m. It is a smoke- and alcohol-free atmosphere.
