Snowman building contest to highlight rink's activities
This summer's Winterfest on July 22 at Galactic Ice will feature daylong activities designed to help snap people out of the summer heat and introduce men, women and children of all ages to the myriad of on- and off-ice programs at Galactic Ice.
Using snow from the ice rink itself, a snowman building contest will top the day's list of activities.
"We're excited about this as well as the other events," said John Kauffman, the rink's skating director.
"It's the second time we've had this contest, and it will give people a chance to demonstrate their artistic abilities with frozen water."
Proceeds go to benefit the rink's nonprofit organizations: The Lakemont Figure Skating Club and Altoona Area Youth Hockey Association.

To beat the day's heat, activities start at 9 a.m. with a free Learn to Play Hockey session. Snowman Building starts at 11 a.m. and a public skate with Santa will be from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
At 12:45 p.m., there will be an ice show and free Learn to Skate by The Lakemont Figure Skating Club. There might even be a surprise hockey game of the Reindeer Versus the Elves.
Sled Hockey with the Johnstown Sitting Bulls follows at 2 p.m. Sled hockey is designed for men and women with physical disabilities, allowing them to play hockey. Come in and support the local team.
The day's activities close at 3 p.m. with a Learn to Curl. This free class will introduce you to the Olympic sport of curling.
Winterfest is sponsored by the Lakemont Figure Skating Club, Altoona Area Youth Ice Hockey Association, Trackers and Mustangs Youth Hockey Organizations.
