Juniata Civics hosts 'Titanic Tea'
The Juniata Civics Association hosted a "Titanic Tea" on May 13 at the Civics building. Attendees had the opportunity to get a boarding pass of actual survivors and those who perished on the ship.
Traditional afternoon tea delights were served. Guests got to meet the unsinkable Molly Brown portrayed by Gretchen Kennedy. Mr. Andrews was portrayed by James Kennedy, who designed the ship and a deckhand portrayed by Cameron Pickens.
At the end of the tea, each guest had a chance to see if they survived or perished.
Thomas Foose, son of Thomas and Erin Foose, shared his private collection of Titanic and his knowledge of Titanic with the tea guests.
A soup sale was held on Election Day, May 16. Multiple soups were offered for sale. The Juniata Civics is looking for older photos from events and years past for its archives. If you have any, please contact the Civics to donate copies.

The Civics will hold its monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 6, at the Civics building, 206 W. 12th Ave., Altoona. Membership is available to anyone for $5 to attend any meeting to help plan events.

Extension offers 'Intro to Preserving'
Penn State Extension will offer the "Home Food Preservation: Introduction to Preserving" from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 6, at the Sixth Ward Community Center, 2101 Fifth Ave., Altoona.
This in-person event will explain the scientific reasoning behind today's recommended methods for home food preservation while dispelling food preservation myths and unsafe practices of the past.
This course costs $10. The deadline to register online is June 4. Walk-in registrations will be accepted.

Claysburg book club to meet June 12
CLAYSBURG -- The Claysburg Library book club will meet at 5:30 p.m. June 12. The group will discuss "The End of Absence."
The club meets on the second Monday of each month.
Summer Band to begin rehearsals
HUNTINGDON -- The Community Summer Band will begin rehearsals for its 32nd season from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, June 5, in the social hall of the First Baptist Church, Sixth and Mifflin streets.
The group will hold eight rehearsals in preparation for old-fashioned outdoor band concerts scheduled for Tuesday, July 25, at Sharrar House, Mount Union; Thursday, July 27, at Huntingdon's Blair Park; and Friday, July 28, on the lawn of the Memorial Library in Alexandria.
Rain locations are (respectively) Mount Union High School, Trinity Assembly of God Church, Huntingdon, and the Alexandria Fire Hall social room.
The band plays a variety of music including marches, jazz, medleys and show tunes and is conducted by John Kuehl, with assistance from Rick Kane and Jordan Canner.
Those considering participating should know that they need not be present at all rehearsals or available to play all concerts to become involved and that instruments are available for loan. Questions should be directed to 814-251-4038.

Fort Bedford Museum to host dancers
The Fort Bedford Museum will host the Potomac Dancers at noon and 2 p.m. Saturday, June 3, along the riverfront below the museum, weather permitting.
In the event of rain, performances will be held inside the museum. The group is dedicated to the study of American Indian dance, music and history.
