Honoring educators
Suzanne Auker-Slep received the Volunteer of the Year Award from the Blair County Chapter of the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees. The award was presented by William D. Neugebauer, Pennsylvania State President of PASR. Auker-Slep was recognized for her exemplary service to the philosophy of the organization by serving others through the Mountain Lion Backpack Program, by delivering items to the Altoona Food Bank and to the Teen Shelter as well as helping in numerous other capacities for the organization. Auker-Slep volunteers also with the Women’s Club of Altoona and with her church.
Patricia Waring was presented a commendation from the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees for her exemplary service not only to the Blair County Chapter but to the state organization as well. She received her award from State PASR President and Blair County member William D. Neugebauer. Waring has served for some years as the Blair County treasurer and was named to the position of Region V treasurer. Region V includes Blair/Center, Clearfield, Mifflin, Snyder and Union counties. The Blair County Chapter of PASR meets the first Tuesday of each month at Marzoni’s in Duncansville and welcomes any public school retiree to participate. Cathy Keefe, chapter president, presented her with a plaque from the state headquarters. Each year a chapter may select one of its members who has shown exemplary commitment and responsibility to the tenants of the organization by his or her contributions to the organizations supported by PASR. Through the years, Hammers has been an active member of the local chapter of the organization by serving in various capacities and leadership positions as the chairperson of various committees, most notably as its past president. She now serves as Region V president. Hammers also has been a connection with state legislature and agendas concerning public education.
