50 years ago: Altoona Mayor Andronic Pappas and Mayor-Elect William C. Stouffer attended the funeral of slain state policeman Cpl. John S. Valent in Lewistown. One Altoona man was shot and killed and two were being sought in relation to the shooting.
25 years ago: The Altoona Housing Authority, William Stouffer director, formed six subcommittees to run the authority: budgeting and investments, management and physical improvements, personnel review, occupancy, Section 8 and resident liaison.
10 years ago: A United Kingdom news channel called Sky News, doing a story about the U.S. withdrawal of troops from Iraq, was in Hollidaysburg to film interviews with the family of Hollidaysburg native Sgt. 1st Class Daniel R. Lightner Jr., who was killed in Iraq on Oct. 27, 2005.
