50 years ago: Oct. 29, 1971

The ROTC float titled "Remember the Alamo" in the Penn State Altoona Homecoming parade caught fire near Gable's store on 11th Avenue when a smoke bomb that was part of the float caused it to catch fire causing three Altoona fire companies to respond. The Penn State Blue Band marched in the parade.

25 years ago: Oct. 29, 1996

The Association of Non-Traditional Students at Penn State Altoona, Vicky Zeoli spokesperson, were holding "The Weekend of Charity" to raise money for the Christmas Carol Foundation.

10 years ago: Oct. 29, 2011

About 35 groups from area companies, charities, civic organizations, schools and churches were volunteering to ring the bell and man the kettles for the Salvation Army Christmas collection, the Communication Workers of America and Bell Telephone being among the longest at about 20 years. The amount collected passed $100,000 last year.
