Arizona State University feature twirlers Bower Sarra of Orbisonia and Kylie Cates nearly swept the top prizes at the U.S. National Baton Twirling Championships, held in July.
More than 800 of the nation’s best sport baton twirlers competed in the championships, sponsored by the United States Twirling Association.
Sarra captured the 2021 Collegiate Championship, while Cates took second place. Sarra also won the titles of Grand National Champion in Men’s Solo, 2-Baton and 3-Baton, while Cates was awarded the Grand National Champion title in Strut.
“Representing Arizona State University and the Sun Devil Marching Band on the national stage has long been a dream of mine,” said Sarra in a release. “The Collegiate Championships was by far the most fun and exciting event for me, and I poured my passion for my school into my performances!”
Sarra is a senior at ASU where he is pursuing a degree in mechanical engineering. He is an active member of Tau Beta Pi, the engineering honor society, and has been on the dean’s list for the Ira A. Fulton School of Engineering during his three semesters at ASU. He is the reigning World Champion in Men’s Solo for the World Federation of National Baton Twirling Associations and was the 2019 Men’s Solo Grand National Champion for USTA.
