Educators collect food for pantry
Public school teachers and support staff employees from public schools in Blair and Centre counties raised more than $2,500 for the St. Vincent DePaul Assump-tion Chapel Food Pantry at their annual trivia fundraising event Nov. 14.
More than 90 public school teachers competed in three-hour trivia contest.
To participate in the trivia event, teachers and support staff teams donated food items, gift cards and cash for the food pantry.
This is the 10th year that the trivia event was sponsored and organized by the Pennsylvania State Education Association (PSEA) Central Region Cluster 2. PSEA is the state’s largest labor union and represents public school employees in all of region’s public schools.
“Every year, the event gets bigger,” said Todd Russell, vice president of the Hollidaysburg Area Education Association- PSEA, who coordinated the event. “This is just one of many events that PSEA members do to help our community. As educators, we know how important it is for children and families to have support. This is just one way we can give back to our community.”
Russell said that each year, the Cluster invites local teachers and support staff associations to send teams for the trivia competition, which was held at Jethro’s Restaurant in Altoona.
This year, there were teams from the Altoona Area Education Associ-ation, the Altoona Area Education Support Profes-sionals Association, the Greater Altoona Career and Technical Center Educa-tion Association, Hollidays-burg Area Education Asso-ciation, Claysburg-Kimmel Education Association, Spring Cove Education Association, Bellwood-Antis Education Associ-ation, State College Area Education Association and the Juniata Rails Retired Education Association.
After a very competitive trivia contest, the winners were State College Area Education Association team, which included Shai McGowen, Erol McGowen and Eric Davy.
