Blair commissioners recognize Lyme Disease Awareness Month
At their May 14 meeting, the Blair County commissioners issued a proclamation declaring May as Lyme Disease Awareness Month in Blair County.
Commissioner Bruce Erb read the proclamation and presented it to two of the founding members of the Altoona Area Lyme Disease Support Group.
The support group is the Altoona Region of the PA Lyme Resource Network. Its mission is to provide education, awareness, patient advocacy, support and prevention information for Lyme and other tick-borne diseases.
PA has been No. 1 in cases of Lyme disease since 2011. Ticks can also transmit many other serious diseases with one bite.
Information for preventing tick bites and tick-borne diseases can be found on the palyme.org site under the “Dare 2B Tick Aware” tab.
The Altoona Area Lyme Disease Support Group meets at 6:30 p.m. on the second Thursday of each month at St. Rose of Lima church social hall, 5519 Sixth Ave., Altoona.
Meetings are free and open to the public.
