Claysburg-Kimmel sets registration

CLAYSBURG -- Claysburg-Kimmel Elementary School will hold kindergarten registration for the 2017-18 school year on March 23 and 24.

To be eligible, a child must be 5 years old before July 1.

If you have a child who is eligible for kindergarten and do not receive registration information by

Feb. 28, call the school at 239-5144.

Hollidaysburg Y sets Community Day

HOLLIDAYSBURG -- The Hollidaysburg Area YMCA will hold Community Day from 4 to 9 p.m. March 3.

Community Day, which is held on the first Friday of each month, is when the Y is open for free to the community for open gym and swim.

Area residents can enjoy the aquatic center, sporting a six lane lap pool and a warm water therapeutic pool (kids ages 11 and younger must be accompanied by an adult in the pool). The Y also offers three regulation-size basketball courts.

Cambria tree, plant sale underway

EBENSBURG -- The Cambria County Conservation District is conducting its 45th annual Tree and Plant Sale.

Since 1972, the district has been offering seedlings and nursery stock to help customers create small orchards, wildlife habitat, small fruit gardens and beautiful landscapes.

This year's catalog includes many new varieties of fruit trees, shade and ornamental trees/shrubs, evergreen seedlings and ground cover.

The berry selection includes strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, elderberries and blackberries.

In addition, grapes, asparagus, rhubarb and a selection of perennial grasses and flowers, including three varieties of peonies, are available. Wildlife boxes are also offered, along with support items for plants.

The catalog is available at the district office at 401 Candlelight Drive.

Residents can pick one up or call 472-2120 to have a catalog sent to them.

The deadline for tree and plant orders (and payment) is March 17.

Orders must be picked up between 10 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. April 7 at the Cambria County Fairgrounds.

Charter school to hold open houses

STATE COLLEGE -- The Young Scholars of Central Pennsylvania Charter School will host three open houses of its school and expansion project.

YSCP is at 1530 Westerly Parkway (the intersection of Blue Course Drive and Westerly Parkway).

The events are scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m. today and Thursday and 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

The YSCP is the first school in Centre County to be designated an International Baccalaureate World School. International Baccalaureate is a program offered to students to help develop intellectual, personal, emotional and social skills to live, learn and work in a globalizing world.

It encourages international-mindedness in IB students. Students must first develop an understanding of their own cultural and national identity. They ensure that their programs are accessible to students in a wide variety of schools.

YSCP teaches students from kindergarten to eighth grade and has Spanish and Chinese as part of its language curriculum.

Train show to be held March 5

The Alto Model Train Museum Association will hold its "Scalefest" all-scale train show from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 5 at the Blair County Convention Center.

The show will feature more than 100 vendor tables of trains and train-related items. Attendees have a chance to win a new Lionel train set.

Admission is $5, with children ages 11 and younger admitted free.
