November is a month-long holiday of sorts for gamers, and it comes with a bit of a big question to grapple with -- Hyrule or Vice City?
With "The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake" coming out for Nintendo Switch 2 on Nov. 4, and the much anticipated "Grand Theft Auto VI" releasing two weeks later on Nov. 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S (sorry, PC gamers. It's not time yet), it's safe to assume most of us aren't going to have time to play both of them. I know I won't -- and these are two games I've looked forward to for a long time.
And why wouldn't I be excited? "GTA IV" has been in development for over a decade now and the franchise is one of the most popular of all-time, despite the negative reputation the franchise has had among parents groups over the years.
As for "Ocarina of Time" ... Well, is it really necessary to explain? We're talking about a remake of one of the most
critically-acclaimed video games of all-time. And Nintendo just dropped that announcement out of the blue earlier this summer, as if to look across the aisle at Sony, Rockstar and GTA and said "game on."
It's an impossible question for some, but for me at least, I feel like GTA has a little bit more going for it to appeal in the early-going if I can only choose one.
Any gamer worth their salt knows the story of Ocarina of Time. Link gathers the
McGuffins, saves Princess Zelda and defeats Ganon after traveling through time and creating the single-most convoluted timeline any media franchise has ever had. It's a timeless classic, excuse the pun, but it's not a story most people who have picked up a controller before have at least heard of at some point, and while I'm very happy that Nintendo finally did this, I'm also not in a big rush to go out and get the Switch 2 just to play the remake of a game I've already played through countless times.
"Grand Theft Auto VI" is a brand-new story set in a classic franchise location -- Vice City, based on real-life Miami -- with both male and female protagonists for the first time in series history. Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos' characters give a real Bonnie and Clyde feel to it that I'm looking forward to exploring once the game comes out next month.
It also helps that the game is coming out on Xbox, as well, and not just the PlayStation 5, so I don't need to go out and buy a new system like I will when I eventually want to play "Ocarina of Time."
And that's probably a good thing for me, considering that not only does the PS5 already cost more new than it did six years ago at initial launch due to continuing component shortages due to AI demands, as well as tariffs and inflation during that time, the secondary market for the console has exploded with higher pricing due to other more recent developments in the console's hacking scene.
Suffice it to say, I'm glad I don't have to go out and buy anything new. Everything in the country is more expensive these days. But hopefully (for a little while), things will be better in November.
