Vanillite an underrated choice for ‘Pokemon Go’ event

Pokemon Go’s community day events are some of the most enjoyable days to play the game every year.

Each month, a specific Pokemon appears more frequently in the wild during community day, offering players a chance to catch a hundo, a shiny or the opportunity to grind bonus rewards like additional stardust or experience points.

This month’s community day takes place from 2-5 p.m. April 27 and features Vanillite, an ice-type Pokemon that resembles a soft-serve vanilla ice cream cone, and the bonus reward of three times catch XP.

A lot of players online seem to be disappointed by this selection, but I think it’s an underrated choice, which is going to make for a rewarding day to play the game.

I understand some of the frustrations with having Vanillite community day in April.

Before this community day was announced, Vanillite was considered to be a rare shiny that players had to grind to get. It’s also not meta relevant and very much outclassed by other ice types, including the black and white versions of Kyurem that were recently released during the Go Tour event.

As someone who already has this shiny, I don’t understand the argument some players will make claiming it devalues the rarity of the shiny Pokemon they already have.

The shiny I have has horrible individual values and I’ve been looking for someone to mirror swap it with through a lucky trade, but none of my lucky friends in the game have this shiny yet. After this community day, there’s a strong chance I might end up with a “shundo,” which is a shiny Pokemon with perfect individual stat values, or IVs for short.

If I’m lucky, I might catch a shiny Vanillite with strong-enough IVs in the wild that I could save many of my lucky trades for another community day.

Yes, other players will finally have it. But every Pokemon in the game is stamped with the day and location it was caught. You can still claim you had the shiny before anyone else did, if that’s your thing.

For me, I see this as a chance to obtain 296 XL candies — the required amount needed to max a Pokemon to level 50 in the game — and to earn some additional experience points.

Eventually, I think we’re going to see Scopely raise the level cap from 50 to 60, so it doesn’t hurt to save up some additional experience points right now.

Players who make excellent throws, landing a pokeball in the center of the catch circle when it’s at its smallest size, earn 1,000 experience points per catch. That increases to 3,000 per catch with the event bonus.

If a player has a lucky egg, which doubles the amount of XP he or she will earn every 30 minutes for each one used, 6,000 experience points per catch is a nice and easy way to level up in the game, particularly for new or casual players.

If you’re not at max level and are still trying to earn as many experience points as possible, this is definitely going to be a great community day for you to play.

If none of the bonuses seem appealing and you already have a decent shiny, there’s also nothing wrong with taking a break away from the game for a day, especially when it seems like we’re getting a new event to grind every single weekend.
