Movie night, food pantry open

"Sister Act II" will be shown Friday, April 19, during the free movie night at Twenty-eighth Street Church of the Brethren, 28th Street and Union Avenue.

Snacks will be available at 6:30 p.m., with the movie set to start at 7 p.m.

The church's food pantry distribution is from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Friday, April 19, by appointment only. Call Deb at 814-207-8293 for an appointment.

Novena celebrated

The fourth novena of 2024 to Our Lady of Mount Carmel and St. Therese (the Little Flower) offered by the Discalced Carmelite Nuns of Loretto will open Monday, April 22, and end Tuesday, April 30.

Petitions may be sent to Mother Prioress, Discalced Carmelite Monastery, P.O. Box 57, Loretto, PA 15940.

Motivational Mug offers fellowship

Duncansville Lutheran will hold a "Motivational Mug" at 11 a.m. Sunday, April 21, immediately following the 10 a.m. service. All are welcome for fun, coffee, fellowship and a light lunch. For more information, call the church office at 814-695-0508.

Picnics in the Park planned

The Well of Blair County will host Picnics in the Park at 5:15 p.m. Tuesdays at Grove Memorial Park, Sixth Avenue and 23rd Street. The event includes a family meal followed by a short lesson, activities and games.

Free lunch offered

Providence Presbyterian Church, 2401 Broad Ave., Altoona, will host a free lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, April 20. The lunch will include a meatball sandwich, soup, a dessert and fruit. All are welcome.

Food pantry planned

St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Eighth Avenue and 13th Street, Altoona, will hold its monthly food pantry distribution from 2 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday, April 25.

Food distribution is done on a drive-thru basis to maximize social distancing, and the use of masks is encouraged for those on foot or getting out of their cars. Further information is available on the church's website or Facebook page, or call the church at 814-942-1372; leave a message and calls will be returned.

Donations to the food pantry, either in money or in food, are always welcome.

The food pantry distributions will be held each month and are tentatively scheduled for May 23, June 27, July 25, Aug. 29, Sept. 26, Oct. 24, Nov. 21 and Dec. 19.

Yard sale planned

Newry Lutheran Church, 1030 Shamrock Lane, Newry, is hosting a community yard sale from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 20. Individuals and vendors are invited to bring a table and sell items for a $10 setup fee; food will be available to purchase inside the church. Concert offered

"My Favorite Things," with pianist Barbara Weller Crain and baritone James White, will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 21, at First Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1401 12th Ave., Altoona. Cost is $15 for adults, $5 for students. The concert is sponsored by the Altoona Symphony League and all proceeds benefit the Altoona Symphony Orchestra.

Free lunch, clothing offered

Bethany Lutheran Church, 200 Third Ave., will offer its free monthly meal and clothing giveaway from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, April 27. All are welcome.

Joyful Noise service announced

A Joyful Noise Service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 21, at the Juniata United Methodist Church. This Service is intended for children with Autism, PDD-NOS, ADHD, Down's Syndrome, and any other developmental/ physical challenges and families with young children.

The joy-filled service will bring together children with and without disabilities and give them the opportunity to learn from one another about God's love for them: all in an atmosphere of understanding and acceptance.

The service will be lively with combinations of music, movement, prayer and Bible stories.

Free concerts offered

– A free concert, "The Singing Guitar," by award-winning acoustic guitarist, El McMeen, will be offered at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 19, at Huntingdon's Word of Life Fellowship church, 6013 Wesley Chapel Road, at its intersection with Summit School Road. An offering will be accepted.

McMeen has recorded 18 guitar albums (in addition to compilations), and is featured or included in a number of video releases. He has also written numerous books of guitar music, has given guitar workshops throughout the U.S., and produced recordings by other guitarists. His memoir, "Growing Up in God's Country," about his time in Huntingdon, has been honored as a No. 1 New Release on Amazon.

– Jaggard First Church will host The Chi Rho Singers at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 23, for an evening of sacred music, from contemporary to traditional

The church is at 1801 Pleasant Valley Blvd., Altoona.

The Chi Rho Singers is a choir of the Susquehanna Conference of the United Methodist Church and includes about 25 active and retired pastors under the direction of the Rev. James Hollister and the Rev. Richard Smith.

The audience will be given the opportunity to join the choir in a few selections as well.

The concert is free; offerings accepted.

Plant swap planned

Duncansville Lutheran church will hold its 5th annual plant swap from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 11. Bring a plant or just yourself and enjoy spring.

Duncansville Lutheran is exploring starting a community garden, and needs volunteers who are interested in helping to maintain raised beds. For more information, contact the Duncansville Lutheran office at 814-695-0508.
