Hollidaysburg native’s art exhibition set to begin at CACCC

The Community Arts Center of Cambria County presents "Synthetic World!," an exhibition of paintings and sculptures created by artist Abraham Onkst of Hollidaysburg from Jan. 13 through Feb. 23 at the center, 1217 Menoher Blvd., Johnstown.
The exhibition of about 20 pieces will be in the Goldhaber-Fend Fine Arts Center gallery and will also feature several of the tools and items that are essential to Onkst's studio process. The exhibition explores ideas regarding living in an increasingly synthetic world and creates a conversation about how new tools and technologies like artificial intelligence will influence art in the near future. Onkst is not against utilizing AI and technology as a tool to enhance creativity, but this particular exhibition exists as a sort of counterpoint towards digital expansion and focuses deeply on the human connection to the artwork.
The works stylistically focus on mark-making, layering, textures, movement and color. Onkst believes that no matter how prevalent AI and technology become, humans will always desire to experience real authentic connections to the world around them, the release states. The works in this exhibition heavily explore the layered and complex existence of humanity and serve as a beacon and expression of Onkst's own life experiences.
Onkst graduated with his B.A. in visual art studies in 2023 from Pennsylvania State University and plans to study for his MFA in painting.
A wine and cheese opening reception will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Jan. 13 -- a new engagement experience sponsored by Barbara & Elmer Laslo Cultural Heritage and is a "pay what you decide" event.
The exhibit can be viewed at the Goldhaber-Fend Fine Arts Center gallery from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays. CACCC is closed on Sundays. Admission is based on a "pay what you decide" donation.
