Fender Mender Sales Inc., founded by Barry Halbritter in 1958, was expanding its business in auto body trade and holding an open house at its Canan Station facility.

About 700 representatives of 200 local businesses were to visit 1,800 eighth grade students in Altoona-Blair County Schools for Career Exploration Fair '98 that week. The program was sponsored by the Altoona-Blair County Chamber of Commerce.

The Rev. Malachi Van Tassell, a native of New York, was hired as the new president of St. Francis University in Loretto. The term for the current president, the Rev. Gabriel Zeis, was to expire in 2014.
