Churches plan trick-or-treat events
-- Six Altoona area churches will be meeting at three locations in Altoona for the annual Trunk or Treat. The event will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 22, at Overflow Church, Altoona Alliance Church and Providence Presbyterian Church.
Renew Church, Salvation Army Church and Altoona Restoration Church will join in one of these locations. Many trunks will be decorated, candy will be provided, and refreshments will be served at all three locations.
-- Trunk or Treat/Light Up the Night will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 26, at Wehnwood United Methodist Church. There will be hot dogs, treats, cars and trucks decorated and the fire company with a firetruck. There will be a drawing for a basket for a girl and one for a boy at the end of the evening.
-- Juniata United Methodist Church, 808 N. Fourth St., in the Juniata section of Altoona, will celebrate Trick or Treat at the church from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 26. All children are welcome. For more information, contact the church office at 814-942-6065 or visit the website at www.juniataumc.net.
-- St. John the Evangelist Church, Lakemont Volunteer Fire Company and Lakemont Lions Club will be joining together to sponsor a Trunk or Treat at St. John the Evangelist Church parking lot, 309 Lotz Ave., Altoona, beginning at 12:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 29. Children are invited to trick or treat in the parking lot followed by a parade sponsored by the fire company. Light refreshments will be served after the parade.
-- St. Mary's Parish Life Committee is sponsoring a Trunk-or-Treat Family Fun Fest at St. Mary's Catholic Church Memorial Hall gymnasium, 1414 Fourth Ave., Altoona, from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 21. All are invited to attend this free event for children in a safe environment.
-- Christ Reformed Church, 502 Main St., Alexandria, will host the annual Halloween Candy Blowout during Alexandria's Trick or Treating from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 31.
The evening includes carnival games, hayrides (weather permitting), hot dogs, door prizes and candy. Kids and families of all ages are welcome and costumes are encouraged, but not required. -- Calvary United Methodist Church, 167 Blue Ball Road, West Decatur, will hold Treats from the Trunk from 4 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 29. Set up will be at the Boggs Township lot across from the church. If interested in providing treats, be at the lot by 3:30 p.m. to set up. In case of inclement weather, the event will be held in the church basement. Boggs Township annual Trick or Treat night will immediately follow.

Kirkin' of the Tartans
Kirking of the Tartans will be held at 10 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 22, at the First Presbyterian Church, 601 Walnut St., Hollidaysburg during the church's 235th anniversary celebration. There will be bagpipes, Celtic music and liturgy, followed by a shortbread social. Everyone is invited to wear plaid for the celebration.
Movie night planned
The movie "Northern Borders" will be shown at the Twenty-eighth Street Church of the Brethren, 28th Street and Union Ave., Altoona, tonight. Snacks will be available at 6:30 p.m. followed by the movie at 7 p.m. All are invited to the free event.
Food pantry pick up set
Food pantry items may be picked up today at the Twenty-eighth Street Church of the Brethren, 28th Street and Union Ave., Altoona. Participants must have an appointment for pick up. Call Deb at 814-207-8293 for information or to set up an appointment.
Free lunch served
The Fourth Street Church of God, Fourth Street and 21st Avenue, Altoona, will serve a free lunch from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 21. The meal is available for eat in or take out.
Free lunch, children's clothing offered
Second Avenue Global Methodist Church, 130 Second Ave., Altoona, will serve a free lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. Oct. 21. All are welcome Free children's clothing will also be available at this time through the church's Hope Chest.
Free concert
Wehnwood Community String Ensemble will present a free concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 22, at St. Monica's Catholic Church,
3037 Colonel Drake Highway, Chest Springs. The public is invited.
Food pantry distribution set
St Luke's Episcopal Church, Eighth Avenue and 13th Street, Altoona, will hold its monthly food pantry distribution from 2 to
5:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 26. Food distribution is done on a drive-
thru basis. More information is available on the church's website or Facebook page, or call the church at 814-942-1372 and leave a message for a return call. All new or returning clients are welcome.
Donations to the food pantry, either in money or in food, are always accepted.
Annual rosary devotion planned
Annual Rosary Devotion with Mary, featuring the Luminous Mysteries, will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 22, at St. Rose of Lima Church, Altoona. The event is sponsored by the Legion of Mary, Altoona-Johnstown Curia.
Healing service set
A healing service will be held at 6 p.m. followed by Mass with Father Julio, T.O.R., at 7 p.m. Oct. 20 at St. Aloysius Church,
7911 Admiral Peary Highway, Cresson.
Free lunch offered
Providence Presbyterian Church, 2401 Broad Ave., Altoona, will offer a free soup and sandwich lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct 21. The lunch will include a ham barbecue sandwich, a bowl of soup, a dessert and fruit. All are welcome to eat in the social hall and fellowship with others. No take outs are available.
Chiz Rider at Jaggard First UMC
Trumpet player Chiz Rider will present a sacred concert of music at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 22, at the Jaggard First United Methodist Church, 1810 Pleasant Valley Blvd., Altoona.
St. Jude Triduum set
St. Mark's Catholic Church, 416 Sixth Ave., Altoona, will hold its annual St. Jude Triduum with a 5:30 p.m. Mass on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, Oct. 26-28. St. Jude is the Patron of Hopeless Cases. The Sacrament of Reconciliation will be offered prior to each Mass. Triduum Prayers will be prayed at each Mass followed by Veneration of the Relic of St. Jude. Refreshments will be served after the last day of the Triduum.
Speaker series features dietitian
Wehnwood United Methodist Church's informational speaker series will feature a dietitian at noon Oct. 25 at the church, 2500 Juniata Gap Road. Participants will learn healthy eating habits to help during the holiday season. A light lunch will be served.
Bergman to speak
Jerry Bergman, a professor of biology, genetics and psychology will speak on "Can mutations and natural selection create humans," at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 27, in 262 Willard Building on the Penn State University Park campus. At 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 28, a fellowship breakfast will be held at the Faith Baptist Church, 647 Valley Vista Drive, State College, where Bergman will share his testimony "From Atheist to Creationist." Reservations must be made for the break by calling 570-452-5000. On Sunday, Oct. 29, Bergman will speak at the Faith Baptist Church during the 9 a.m. and 10:15 a.m. services. The topic will be "Why did God create viruses, bacteria and other pathogens" and "Persuaded by the evidence."
