The Dallas Brass, a world-class brass quintet with percussion, will present "American Musical Journey" at 7 p.m. Sept. 18 at the Hollidaysburg Area Senior High School auditorium.
A fan favorite, the Dallas Brass will be joined for portions of the concert by Hollidaysburg Junior and Senior High School bands and the Hollidaysburg Senior High School Chorus.
During the school day, the Dallas Brass will conduct clinics with students, which will culminate with the concert, where about 400 musicians will participate, said Scott Sheehan, Hollidaysburg music department chair/director of bands.
The Dallas Brass last visited the area in 2014, he said, and performed for a near-sell out crowd. The concert is sponsored by the Hollidaysburg Area Music and Arts Parents Association and the Altoona Mirror.
"We're excited to be able to offer this opportunity to the students," Sheehan said. "These are world-class musicians who tour all over the country. In addition to being an educational opportunity, these are very entertaining and virtuoso musicians."
This program incorporates a full complement of brass and percussion for a musical journey through American history, according to the band's website. From the time of George Washington to the present day, music will be selected from the masters, including musical styles from Dixieland, Swing, Broadway, Folk, Patriotic and Pop.
Michael Levin founded The Dallas Brass in 1983 and continues as artistic director. Band members are: Brian Neil and Luis Cardenas Cassilas, each on trumpet, Juan Berrios, on horn/alto horn,/flugelhorn, John Wasson, trombone, Paul Carson, tuba, and Craig Hill on percussion/drums.
Tickets are $10 and will go on sale beginning Tuesday, Sept. 5, at the Mirror offices, 301 Cayuga Ave., from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Tickets will also be available at the high school and at the Blair Regional YMCA, 1111 Hewitt St., Hollidaysburg.
This leg of the tour also takes the Dallas Brass to Bellefonte High School on Sept. 19 and to Huntingdon High School on Sept. 20.
