Mid-State Bank, Joseph E. Fox president, announced plans to construct a full-service branch bank in the Wissinger Shopping Village at Oak Avenue and 31st Street. Another branch bank was announced a week before for Wehnwood.
25 years ago: 1998
Altoona Mayor Tom Martin and City Council traveled to Williamsport to confer with officials there about solutions to crime and drugs and blighted properties, of which Williamsport had similar problems to Altoona. Upscale housing built there also increased the city's tax base.
10 years ago: 2013
The Pennsylvania Game Commission was planning a 78-acre burn on State Game Land 267 in Logan Township after first conducting a test burn to check fire behavior and smoke dispersion.

On Sept. 25, 1957, nine Black students who'd been forced to withdraw from Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas, because of unruly white crowds were escorted to class by members of the U.S. Army's 101st Airborne Division.
