Altoona Area Public Library has announced its activities for August.
– Sample Food through the Ages at 6 p.m. today in the library board room. Experience a historical presentation on the food topic for the month, followed by a cooking demonstration. Samples and recipes will be given out at the end of the program. This month's topic is the History of Pancakes. Registration, a library card and a $3 fee is required. – Are you a teen looking to test your teamwork and puzzle solving skills? Then come and participate in the AAPL's Teen Summer Scavenger Hunt on Aug. 3 from 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Team members will be given pieces of clues and have to work together to solve them. – Children in kindergarten and up (plus caregivers) are invited to attend Thrilling Thursday -- Jeopardy Jubilee at 1:30 p.m. Aug. 3, and answer trivia questions about literary companions, books, friendship and more. – Chess Club meets from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursdays at the front tables near the Adult Circulation desk. No registration is necessary.
– Enjoy the company of others who enjoy doing handiwork at the library Knit-In, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday Aug. 5. There may be teachers to help get you started. Beginners bring size 8 needles, and some light-colored yarn. This is a free adult program. No registration required.
– Silvers-Screen Saturdays -- Free family friendly matinees are shown at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.. On Aug. 5, see "Lilo & Stitch" at 10 a.m. and "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" at 1 p.m. in the library theater. No registration necessary.
– Little LEGO Builders DUPLO Day will be held at 9:30 a.m. Aug. 10. This special play time is for children ages 4 and younger. Registration is required by calling 814-946-0417, ext. 123.
– A free hourlong Developmental Playgroup for children ages 3 and younger and their caregivers is designed to help parents and children work together to meet the child's developmental goals. Choose from the following dates and times: Aug. 15 at 5:30 p.m., Aug. 16 at 9 or 10:15 a.m. The playgroup is facilitated by an early childhood specialist and designed to provide fun activities to promote each child's language, problem-solving, motor skills and social interactions. Space is limited so registration is required. The topic this month is Social/Emotional Development. A Blair County Library card is required to attend (one card per household). – Children ages 4-12 can let their creativity run wild at a Painting Party at 3 p.m. Aug. 16. Experiment with a variety of paints and techniques as they decorate a project to take home. This is a free event but registration is required by calling 814-946-0417, ext. 123, to register.
– Teens are invited to Rock Art Painting at 3 p.m. Aug. 17. Come help paint decorative rocks for the library's rock garden. Paint some for the library and some for yourself to take home. We will have samples or create your own. Call 814-946-0417, ext. 125, to register.
– Join Blair County Historical Society at the library on Aug. 17, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. for its new educational program: A two-hour workshop for fourth- to eighth-graders to learn how to document current events, personal history/ancestry and build a time capsule. – The library is partnering with the Clay Cup to paint ceramics at the library at 6 p.m. Aug. 22. The cost of the program is $13 and does need to be paid in advance by Aug. 14 in order to reserve materials. This is an adult program. Call 814-946-0417, ext. 125, to register.
– The library will be having a library wide event from 3 to 4 p.m. Aug. 24 with crafting, virtual reality, robots and snacks. Outside will be snow cones and sidewalk chalk art. No registration is required.
– The Shelf Indulgence Book Club for adults will meet at 10 a.m. Aug. 26 in the library board room. This is a BYOM (bring your own mug) and there will be a choice of coffee or tea. The book for August is "The Vanishing Half" by Brit Bennett. Register by calling 814-946-0417, ext. 125.
– Story Times: Families of young children are invited to check out the library's free educational story time programs for caregiver and child to enjoy together. – The library has expanded the One on One Tech Appointments to the Downtown Altoona Transportation Center, 1231 11th Ave., Altoona. These classes can be tailor-made to fit your tech needs. Take your own devices and ask for help for specific problems. The sessions will be limited to one or two related people and last no more than one half hour.
