STATE COLLEGE -- The State Theatre will show the Ukrainian film "The Guide" at 2 p.m. July 30 during a special screening.
"The Guide," a two-hour dramatic film produced by Ukrainian director Oles Sanin in 2014, is set in the early 1930s against Soviet efforts to exterminate the Ukrainian people in the 1930s through starvation and other policies. The story is told through Peter, a 10-year-old boy whose American engineer father is killed for obtaining secret documents about the repressions, which are hidden in a book. Peter flees from the police with a blind kobzar (Ukrainian folk minstrel), Ivan Kocherga. Ivan does everything to help his young guide to grow up and survive with a kind and clear soul that will not be hardened by what his eyes have seen. He tells his young guide elaborate stories that make him believe there can be a different reality from what he sees around him.
Tickets cost $15 (plus fee) and are available at https://thestatetheatre.org/events/the-guide/ or in-person at the box office. Donations will be also accepted through QR codes, which will be placed in the lobby for moviegoers to scan, and donation jars will also be placed on-site. All event proceeds will go toward supporting Ukraine.

This historic venue will be providing its community members with a unique opportunity to both learn about and discuss the war's impacts.
