St. Matthew School business bakes thank yous

Members of the Rescue Aid baked a tasty thank you to financial supporters of St. Matthew School in Tyrone.

The Rescue Aid is a student-run entrepreneurial business.

"As we talked about how to say thank you, we decided to create a product that someone could also enjoy," said business board member and fourth grader Grayson Vaughn. "We love cooking so we decided to combine that with a statement of appreciation which is how we came up with the Rescue Aid Cookie."

With the need to bake over 13 dozen cookies, the students math skills came into play as they calculated the quantity of ingredients needed and to generate a shopping list. "As with this group's other business ventures, it is so exciting to see them use their academic skills to solve real world problems," said teacher Marjorie Frank. "Not only were their math skills essential to creating a shopping list, it was also an integral part in the actual cooking process along with the science of cooking."

"We are so fortunate to have a licensed commercial kitchen as part of our school campus, which made the baking portion possible," said entrepreneurial adviser Steve Stoner. "This allowed us to also learn about required health regulations and procedures we had to follow to produce a quality product. The hair nets were a real hit with the young bakers."

Once the cookies were baked, the students then packed the finished product and adhered a specially prepared label. Flanking the Rescue Aid logo, the message stated, "Thank you for supporting Saint Matthew School. It has made a difference in my life. With gratitude," and each student signed his or her name.

Student Hannah Narehood added, "I hope they enjoy their cookies. It was so much fun baking and packaging them."

"And they tasted really good, too!" exclaimed Quinn Markel.
