The Altoona Area High School and Keith and Roosevelt Junior High Schools were adopting new gym uniforms for girls because some physical education classes would be held outdoors. The new uniforms were available at J.C. Penney's and Gable's Department Stores.

Altoona Mayor Tom Martin asked local drug treatment centers like the Salvation Army, Right Turn of PA and Cove Forge to try to admit more local residents for treatment as opposed to out-of-towners, who added to the area's drug problems.

Chaim Rafalowski, a disaster management coordinator from Israel, spoke at a training meeting of the Southern Alleghenies EMS Council Medical Reserve Corps held at the Casino at Lakemont Park, attended by about 150 emergency response personnel.
