A group called the Juniata Area Telephone Reassurance Service, Mrs. Charles Snyder volunteer, had been formed to call the homes of elderly people living alone or with an illness to insure they were alright. In-home visits were being conducted first.

U.S. Rep. Bud Shuster, State Sen. Pro Tem Robert Jubilirer and State Sen. Rick Geist joined city officials in breaking ground for the pedestrian crossover from downtown Altoona across the railroad tracks to the Railroaders Memorial Museum in the Station Mall.

Langston Anderson, 11, a student at Bellwood-Antis Middle School, met President George W. Bush while with his father at a Wounded Warrior event in San Antonio, Texas. Langston was about to travel to Australia with the People to People Program.
