50 years ago: June 1, 1973

Penn State Altoona, Dr. John L. Leathers director, in cooperation with Altoona Hospital and the Blair County Home Nursing Agency, was to begin a four-year baccalaureate nursing program.

25 years ago: June 1, 1998

Admiral James M. Loy, a native of Altoona, was sworn in as the 21st commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard in ceremonies in Washington, D.C. He was a 1960 graduate of Altoona Senior High School and 1964 graduate of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. He served 43 combat patrols in Vietnam.

10 years ago: June 1, 2013

The Intermunicipal Relations Committee of Altoona, Logan Township, Hollidaysburg and Tyrone, at Peoples Natural Gas Field, was selling Earth Machines for $55 that composted kitchen scraps, leaves, plants and potting soil, and SYSTERN Rain Barrels for $65 that captured rain water from roofs, etc.
