Chorale to present concert
The Blair Concert Chorale will perform the third concert of the 2022-23 season at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, May 13, at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church, 14th Street and 12th Avenue, Altoona. The Glory encompasses many genres of music. Highlighting the concert is a medley of songs from the Broadway musical "Rent."
Tickets are $15 for adults and $8 for students, and are available at Thompson Pharmacies (Chestnut Avenue and Hollidaysburg), through EVENTBRITE, from any Chorale member and at the door. Tickets for the concert are also available by emailing manager@blairconcertchorale.org.
Free lunch offered
The monthly community lunch will be held at noon Wednesday, May 10, at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 13th Street and Eighth Avenue, Altoona. Lunch is available for dine-in or take out. The free meal is picnic themed and open to everyone; donations accepted.
Clothing giveaway set
Grace's Closet at Grace Lutheran Church, 1114 N. Cambria St., Bellwood, will host a clothing giveaway from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 13. Spring and summer clothing is available. Masks are optional. For more information, call the church at 814-742-7501 or 814-742-7416.
Speakers series to begin
A new speaker series will begin at noon May 10 at Wehnwood United Methodist Church. The speaker will be Erin Kay, executive director of CONTACT Altoona. Services available will be discussed as well as volunteer opportunities.
Harold Ermin will be the speaker on June 7. Ermin is the state advocate for Americans with Disabilities Act.
Rep. Lou Schmitt will address the topic of protecting yourself from Elder Fraud and Financial Exploitation during the July meeting; the date is not yet set.
The meetings are free and open to the public. A light lunch will be served.
UUFBC to host speaker
The Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Blair County will host a presentation by Carol Taylor from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Sunday, May 7, at the Eve Chapel on the Altoona PSU campus. Taylor has five years experience locally in the field of rehabilitation counseling. Her background is in law, social activism and education.
"Addressing Substance Abuse in PA, Reality vs. Misconceptions: A Counselor's View" will cover what leads to the development of substance misuse problems, why addiction (also referred to as substance use disorder) is a disease, and what does and does not work in the struggle to abate this epidemic. Mental health will also be addressed, both as a contributing factor and as it relates to aftercare. Taylor will also propose ways to support those close to us who are struggling with these issues.
All are invited to attend.
Clothing, food donations accepted
Donations of clothing and non-perishable foods will be accepted from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 6, at Hollidaysburg Church of the Brethren, 1028 Penn Street
(Route 36). The church parking lot will serve as a collection site for the American Rescue Workers. Those dropping off donations can receive a tax receipt.
Ladies tea planned
East End United Methodist Church will hold a Ladies Tea at 6 p.m. Friday May 12. The event will be held at the church, 405 East Hudson Ave., Altoona. All ladies are invited; bring a friend. Reservations can be made by calling Sue Epple at 814-505-4226.
Praise and worship service set
Praise, worship and a witness talk by Deacon Gene Neral will be held at 6 p.m. Friday, May 5, at St. Aloysius Church, 7911 Admiral Peary Highway, Cresson. Confessions will begin at 6:30 p.m., followed by a Healing Mass with the Rev. Julio Rivero, T.O.R., at 7 p.m.
Yard/bake sale planned
A community yard sale/bake sale will be held at Lakemont United Methodist Church, 340 Lotz Ave., Altoona, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 10. Angel Feet Ministry providing shoes
The Juniata United Methodist Church Angel Feet Ministry, a service to children from birth to ninth grade, provides sneakers, socks and a new book to children visiting the program. Eligibility is based on medical assistance, CHIP or referral to the ministry. Parents may call for an appointment and must accompany their child to the shoe bank. Children may visit the shoe bank at six-month intervals. Availability of shoes is dependent on contributions and inventory. Families living in southern Blair County -- Roaring Spring, Claysburg, Martinsburg and East Freedom -- may call and arrange for shoes to be picked up at the Roaring Spring Community Library -- JUMC Angel Feet Ministry Nook. JUMC Angel Feet Ministry has been serving the Blair County community for 10 years.
