Altoona Police Chief William T. Stephens, who had 38 years of service, received the first annual J. Edgar Hoover Memorial Award in ceremonies at City Hall for outstanding contributions to public safety and advancement of law enforcement. The late J. Edgar Hoover was director of the FBI.

World famous entertainer Frank Sinatra, 82, died May 15 in Los Angeles. Roy Piper of Altoona, who had played in his band at the Cal-Neva Lodge in Nevada, gave an interview to the Mirror about his time with Sinatra.

The sixth annual Pints for Pets Brewfest, with Rick Vanevenhoven as chairman, was held at Peoples Natural Gas Field to raise money for the Central Pennsylvania Humane Society. Over $300,000 had been raised in six years and breweries from Ohio, California and Utah took part.
