The Altoona Area Public Library will host a retirement party for the library ferrets -- Draco and Juniper -- from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. today, Tuesday, April 4, in the library Youth Room.
Also today, a cooking demonstration and historical presentation on Civil War Army rations will be held at 6 p.m. during Food through the Ages. The discussion will include hardtack, salt beef, tea and chicory coffee. Cost to attend is $3, and registration is required.
Virtual Reality for Teens will be held at 3:30 p.m. April 5. Teens will be able to take turns playing different games on the Oculus, including Beat Saber. Call the library to register.
Bad Art Night will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. April 13. All art supplies will be provided. A best worst art trophy will be awarded at the end of the event. Registration required.
Super Saturday: All About Pets will be held at 10:30 a.m. April 15 with the Central PA Humane Society with an animal friend to meet. Each child will have an opportunity to spend 10 minutes reading with the library's special guest. There will also be dog/cat toys crafts to complete. Donations for the humane society will be accepted. This program is geared toward children ages 5 and older. Pre-registration is required.
Adults can learn sewing machine basics from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. April 18 and April 25.
Space is limited, and those taking part must attend both days. Registration is required.
CD Scratch Art for Teens will be held at 3:30 p.m. April 21. This new craft will recycle the library's unused CDs into art projects. Registration required.
Super Saturday: Flower Friends will be held at 10:30 a.m. April 22. Celebrate Earth Day by painting a flower pot and planting some seeds to take home. Registration required.
Celebrate Carol Burnett's 90th birthday at 12:30 p.m. April 22 in the library theater where participants will learn some facts and celebrate the life of the legendary comedian. After the presentation, the movie "Annie." will be shown. This is a free event for teens and adults. Call the library to register.
Discover your Story: Genealogy will be held at 6 p.m. April 24 in the library theater. The program will explain how to get started with genealogical research using library digital resources. Registration required.
National Library Week: Bedtime Storytime will be held at 7 p.m. April 24. The special all-ages late night storytime will celebrate National Library Week. The event features a story, songs and crafts. Registration required.
Book Button Magnets & Blackout Poetry will be held at 3:30 p.m. April 26 as the library celebrates National Library Week with an afterschool day of crafting. The program is geared toward children ages 7 and older. Pre-registration is required.
Stuffed Animal Sleepover is a special library sleepover just for kids' favorite stuffed friends. Bring the toy to the library Youth Room no later than 5 p.m. Thursday, April 27, where they will spend the night and enjoy all sorts of library hijinks. Stop back in on Friday, April 28, to pick up the toy and see what silly adventures they had the night before. Each stuffed friend will come back with a book chronicling their adventures and a special gift for their human. No pre-registration is required.
The Spring used book sale will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, April 28; 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 29; and 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday, May 1, on the ground floor of the library. There are no Sunday hours. Monday is $5 a bag day. All money raised benefits the library.
The library offers a variety of programs each month, including chess, Lego and book clubs and story times for a variety of ages.
