John Iorio, city dog law enforcement officer, received the Altoona Jaycees' distinguished service award at Jaycee Recognition Night at the Penn Alto Hotel. He handled between 2,000 and 3,000 calls a year.
25 years ago: 1998
Second Avenue United Methodist Church, the Rev. Andy Morgan, pastor, had a program called "The Rock" for about 50 elementary/high school children that offered games like basketball, table and board games, dinner and Bible study with about 15 adult volunteers.
10 years ago: 2013
George P. George, 88, West Brandywine, an Altoona native who, in 1958, founded Texas Hot Dogs, the first drive-in restaurant in the area, died April 15. He had worked at his father's Texas Hot Dogs downtown while in high school. He was a veteran of World War II, flying 37 bombing missions in the Pacific Theater in a B-24.
