Cambria Hero Hike to be held May 20

2 min read

EBENSBURG -- Cambria County will hold its seventh annual Hero Hike on Armed Forces Day, Saturday, May 20.

The hike is conducted along the Ghost Town Trail from Nanty Glo to Ebensburg and is aimed at reminding participants of the sacrifices made by those serving in uniform.

"Donations are encouraged, but never required," said Phil Rice, Cambria County Director of Veteran Services.

"Our main goal is to honor those who serve our Nation, around the world, each day. And to spend some time on the trail talking to each other about some of those experiences of service."

County President Commissioner Thomas Chernisky encourages anyone interested to attend, whether they traverse the entire 7.5-mile stretch or simply join the group at the end for a brief ceremony.

"It's always just a great time to honor our men and women in uniform, and enjoy a beautiful trail right here in Cambria County that we're also incredibly proud of," said Chernisky.

"It's always amazing to watch everyone who comes out to celebrate our troops, no matter the weather," said Commissioner William "B.J." Smith. "Even during the pandemic, our community turned out for this event to ensure our military personnel were recognized."

"Cambria County has a proud military legacy and this has become a great annual tradition to ensure we pass that history of honor on to future generations," said Commissioner Scott Hunt.

Runners and bicyclists are also welcome. Those interested in participating can call VCI at 814-255-0355 to sign up or make a donation. Those who do pre-register and donate $20 by Friday, April 28, will receive a commemorative T-shirt.

All donations go to Veteran Community Initiatives, Inc. (VCI), a nonprofit organization based in Johnstown that assists veterans and their families.

The Hero Hike begins 9 a.m. at 902 Chestnut St. in Nanty Glo, and ends at 424 Prave St. in Ebensburg.

There will be a brief ceremony held at the Pfc. Peter Coleman Memorial Underpass at 11:45 a.m.

"We're proud to partner with the Cambria County Commissioners and Cambria County Veteran Services Office," said Tom Caulfield, the director of VCI.

"Events like this enable our community participants to improve and expand the services and programs our organizations provide our veterans and family members in the most effective and caring manner."
