Commissioners set seasons, allocations

On April 12, the Pennsylvania Board of Game Commissioners gave final approval to the 2025-26 hunting seasons and bag limits. With a few exceptions, the new seasons and bag limits are fundamentally the same as last year. The statewide archery bear season will be shortened from three weeks to one week and will run from October 18-25. WMUs 2B, 5B, 5C and 5D will continue to have their longer archery bear seasons. Those WMUs comprise the cities of Pittsburgh and Philadelphia and their suburbs. Of interest to hunters in our region, the extended firearms season for antlerless deer will ...

Time to fine-tune your trout tactics

As we begin the second week of trout season, anglers will encounter a much different experience on the streams now compared to the opening weekend. There will be less fish left in most places, and those that managed to evade the onslaught of the first few days will be much harder to fool. Gone are the hopelessly gullible fish that easily fell prey to even the least skilled anglers during the first hours of the season. But some fish succeeded in getting away by slipping off the hook or were returned to the water after being caught by an angler practicing catch and release. Other fish ...

2025 trout season opens next Saturday

The statewide trout season opens next Saturday at 8 a.m. This annual rite of spring is something a great many anglers eagerly look forward to, and this year maybe a bit more than usual. Heavy rains had pushed most streams throughout the region to flood stage, making fishing next to impossible or even downright dangerous on some of the larger waterways. I’m sure no one wants a repeat of last year’s flooding to wipe out the traditional beginning of trout season. Although I rarely ...

Individuals and groups are invited to help. Volunteers can show up at 9 a.m. at either the Spruce Creek United Methodist Church in Spruce Creek or the New Pig Parking lot near Delgrosso’s Park. LJRA and area businesses ...

Again, Sunday hunting legislation introduced

Last year, legislation to repeal Pennsylvania’s longtime ban on general Sunday hunting passed the state Senate. This was Senate Bill 67, which had also gained preliminary approval in the House of Representatives before the legislative session expired and with it another opportunity for Sunday hunting in Pennsylvania. Earlier this month, Sen. Dan Laughlin, R-Erie, reintroduced Senate Bill 67. If that legislation manages to pass both chambers of the General Assembly this time around and is then signed into law by the governor, general Sunday hunting could finally become a reality for ...
