The Zoning Hearing Board granted a variance for Bishop Guilfoyle Catholic High School to replace a lighted sign that required its letters to be placed manually with a remote-controlled electronic signboard on the lawn in front of the school.
The school wants to take advantage of modern technology to better inform the community about school activities and student accomplishments, according to school board President Joe Adams and board members Scott Durbin and Joe DeLeo -- who's also vice president for estimating and field service for the firm that will install the new equipment, Blair Sign Co.
The sign must not be used for commercial advertising, although painted panels adjacent to the electronic portion of the sign will bear the names of four project sponsors -- two names per side.
The new equipment will be installed on the existing posts.
The new sign will be slightly smaller than the existing one, DeLeo said.
The sign will be full-color and dimmable.
The zoning ordinance requires that the light generated by electronic signs not exceed 0.3 candlepower in excess of ambient light.
The sign will be across Pleasant Valley Boulevard from Calvary Cemetery.
The sign will be about 450 feet from the nearest house.
That's far enough away that it shouldn't bother anyone living there, officials said.
